I have searched something about “Suku Laut” and there are so many things that are different from others. Do you want to know more about them? Okay, Lets read my article.


Now, I want to introduce you about little history of Orang Suka Laut (The Sea Tribe). Orang Suku Laut (The Sea Tribe) in de facto is the ethnic groups in small amounts in the majority Malay community. They live on the islands in the waters of Riau Island province. The origins of the coming of the Sea Tribe in Riau Island is estimated around 2500-1500 BC as the nation's proto-Malay (Old Malay) and then spread through the Semenanjung Malaka to Sumatra. Post-1500 BC large migration flows occur Deutro Malay nation that resulted in the nation pressed Proto Malays to coastal areas (coastal plains). Pressed group is now known as Orang Suku Laut (The Sea Tribe). In Indonesia, the mention of ethnicity is commonly known as sea people or tribe boat / canoe tribe. In other country we found many kind of named of The Sea Tribe such as sea nomads, sea folk, sea hunters and gatherers.
When the land was ruled by the Malay Sultanate of Riau-Lingga around the 18th century, The Sea Tribe described as a collection of ethnic groups or clans are distinguished based on their domicile territory. Each clan consists of various names, such as baked Tribe (Suku Tambus), Galang  Tribe(Suku Galang), Mantang Tribe (Suku Mantang), baroque Tribe (Suku Barok), and Mapor Tribe (Suku Mapor).

Information about the Sea Tribe

Area of living:
The Sea Tribe settlements in Bintan, Riau Island. In the past, the sea tribes living on the boat and wander from island to island to Riau Islands. They inhabit Riau Islands since the 7th century BC, earlier than the Malay tribes. Now, they live in stilt houses on the coast.

Taboos and rules:
Firstly in terms of religiosity, The Sea Tribe is considered a group of people who are not religious. Said the Malays, Chou wrote, were not enough for them just vowed to Islam, but they are still practicing black magic and sorcery. They also never run worship (in Islam).
Secondly, customs (how to act). In the eyes of the Malays, said Chou, The Sea Tribe married in a 'strange'. Sea Tribe married men after drinking alcohol lovers together. When they are drunk, they entered a house and sleep together. Then, when they wake up, they leave the house and go to sea to fish together and so forth.
Thirdly, the logic of The Sea Tribe is the thing that does not make sense to stay on the mainland because they regard land as a place to bury the body of a relative who has died. Therefore, soil or land is a dirty place, so it does not deserve to live.
Fourthly, some of Local beliefs (worshiping the god of the sea); most have embraced Islam and Christianity.


Livelihoods:
Nowadays, The Sea Tribe people regard the Malays are the aristocrats and merchants. Some of The Sea Tribe people working as a fisherman, still apply of hunting and gathering food from natural sources, and still practice barter exchange.

Other specific information:
The term agreed upon Malay Sea is not only true for people as the sea forager, but is also given to those who live along the coast in the Riau Islands.
For the Sea People themselves, they see the group as the native Malays and Malays call the Malays as a trade because their aristocratic positions in the past. In addition, the authenticity of The Sea Tribe claims as a native (indigenous people) islands in Riau Islands is derived from the stories narrated orally from generation to generation.
People Sea Tribe gets label of the New Order government as part of a isolated and alien peoples or isolated and backward peoples whose communities are included in the category of pre-villages.
It departs from the definition of the backward tribes who have been formulated by the government, among others: (1) still apply of hunting and gathering food from natural sources, (2) local religious practices (such as animism and shamanism) as opposed to the principle of Belief in God in Pancasila, (3) the condition of the community or society is considered un-structured, (4) the majority of them are illiterate because they have not received formal education, (5) the resulting art is still at the level of culture 'lowest' (primitive), (6) still practice barter exchange and so on.
Administratively then they are given the freedom to religion, because of local beliefs that they profess is not the agenda of both countries recognize shapes even cult.
